Pearlware bust of William Clowes a Primitive Methodist, c1840
William Clowes (1780-1851) was born in Burslem Staffordshire and came from a line of potters. He initially worked as a potter then had aspirations to be a premier dancer, finally he was converted and led Methodist meetings.

Pearlware silver resist decorated jug commemorating William Henry West Betty the British Child Actor, circa 1804
William Betty was born in shrewsbury in 1791 and rose to fame on the stage as a boy prodigy. He attracted great attention and played classical parts in Covent Garden and Drury Lane attracting an unprecedented salary of 75 guineas a night.
George III presented him to the queen and Pitt on one occasion adjourned the House of Commons so that members might be in time for his performance.
End of the spout broken off and restuck. 5½" tall

There is some conjecture of what use this melon had, it was not a food mould and the most plausible suggestion so far is for a counter balance for curtains or lighting the interior filled with lead shot.
